Please read the UUA Board of Trustees response here

As many of us are aware, there were several racist acts that transpired during GA 2005 within and without the UU community. We at FUUSE are doing our best to assemble information about these events from official sources, and have contacted several offices of the UUA as well as other involved organizations. However, we as a community need to have patience regarding the dissemination of this information.

A UUA staff member had this to say about getting an 'official' statement of the events at GA:

"We're dealing with real people with real feelings who might need to take a break for a couple of says before coming back with a 'statement.' People should try to be understanding of the limitations of human ability, and *not* to feel like they're entitled to know every detail immediately."

Know that we at FUUSE are concerned about all of our members and will relay information as we have it, but for now, please be patient and understanding of all those who were involved or have been hurt by these horrible acts of prejudice and racism.

It's nice to know that a respectable amount of thought is going into an issue such as this instead of just plastering the events up in a quick and hasty manner.

Hey, if anyone wants to process who was at GA. I'm here. I know there are others too, but I was a chaplain...so if you want to just talk about your feelings about it, I'm here.

As a White person particularly trying to reach other White folks, I want to remind myself and others that:

for every incident of overt, unquestionable racism that we as White people pay attention to and identify as such, there are countless acts, incidents, and dynamics of racism that we White people choose not to acknowledge or deal with.

for every time we want to (whether we admit it or not - and i do this all the time) point our fingers at the "bad white people", the perpetrators, or even the victims, there are countless ways that we as White people are deeply involved in and part of racism, every minute of every day, both historically and now.

remember that it shouldn't take widespread incidents, crises of any size, incredible pain, or People of Color pouring their hearts and souls and pain out to us, People of Color tokenizing themselves, People of Color teaching us about racism, for us to pay attention to racism, acknowledge racism, and own up. Not only to the individual incidents we may or may not have been present at, but the whole systems. Not only to the specific players in specific times of crisis, but to all the benefits and privileges - obvious and not - we White people receive at the horrific expense of People of Color.

I'm not on FUUSE much but am committed to this community and our work. I hope I can be a place of support to any White folks who need someone to struggle with (as well as a place of support to anyone).

    In faith, Betty Jeanne
