It is with deep regret that I announce the sudden death of J. Michael Oxley, who while he was not technically a young adult, was part of our community because his fiancee, Sarah Egolf, is. J. Michael Oxley died peacefully in his sleep at his favorite music festival, “Nedfest,” in Nederland, Colorado, on August 25, 2007. Mike is survived by his fiancée Sarah Egolf of Laramie, Wyoming, and his father, John S. Oxley of Baltimore, MD; his sister Lisa Marie Taulton; his nieces, Rachel, Kacy, and nephew Logan Taulton. Mike is also survived by his birth parents, George T. Livingstone of Arlington, VA, Sharon Lenore King of Winchester, VA, and brother Nathan King, and their families. Mike was preceded in death by his mother, Royce Ann Oxley.

Mike was born in Washington D.C. in 1967 and raised in small towns in Maryland and Virginia. Mike’s fondest memories included raising 50 chickens for Future Farmers of America and his 8-year service on the Volunteer Fire Department in New Market, Maryland. He had a playful sparkle in his eye and a trick up his sleeve. He was a student of life, whether the lesson was re-building a car, making home-made ice cream, or running for Congress. Mike held a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Wyoming in Secondary Education, and planned to go back for his Master’s degree in Urban Planning. He cared a great deal for the Laramie community. Mike served on the Laramie Planning Commission, was the Wyoming Legislative Coordinator for Amnesty
International, and co-chair of the Wyoming Green Party. As an articulate and passionate advocate for justice and peace, Mike volunteered countless hours for such causes as Biodiversity Conservation Alliance and Stand Up For Peace Wyoming. Perhaps Mike’s greatest quality was his warmth and love for the people in his life. Mike was a dedicated uncle and a dear friend. Mike and Sarah were very happy together and planned to marry and start a family. Mike will be sorely missed by those his life touched.

The Laramie viewing will be held at Montgomery-Stryker Funeral Home, 2133 Rainbow Avenue, Wednesday, August 29, 2007 from 4:30 to 6pm. A memorial service celebrating Mike’s life and potluck reception will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Laramie at the intersection of 14th St. and Gibbon on Thursday, August 30 at 5:30pm.

The Maryland viewing will be held at the Collins Funeral Home, 500 University Blvd. W, in Silver Spring on Friday, August 31 from 7-9pm. A funeral service will follow also at Collins Funeral Home on Saturday, September 1, at 1pm.

The Mountain Desert District has lost something. I was lucky enough to meet Mike. My prayers go out to Sarah and her friends. He will be missed.
